We users will have additional privacy protection options in Chrome, Google for iOS and Family Link, the US company Google has announced.
To mark Internet Safety Day, Google is announcing the newest options and tools that users will be able to customize to protect their personal information.
Additional protection options in Chrome, Google for iOS and Google Drive
- Biometric authentication in Password Manager: Google recommends users use Password Manager as one of the easiest and most secure ways to protect our personal information. New to Google is the biometric authentication option, where users can now view, copy or edit their passwords saved with Google Password Manager in Chrome and Android.
- New protection features in the Google app for iOS: Users could already protect their privacy in the Google app for iOS with options such as Incognito browsing, or clearing search history from the last 15 minutes. Soon, users will also be able to set up Face ID to prevent strangers from opening the Google app on their device and accessing their personal data.
- Spam protection in Google Drive: Google will roll out a new view in Drive for spam content in the coming weeks in beta, which will be similar to the spam folder in Gmail.
New online protection tools and features for families
Google's parental control service, Family Link, allows parents to monitor and protect their children's online activity with features such as limiting time online or restricting certain content. New in online protection for families are:
- Expanded Safe Search: Google Safe Search is already enabled by default for users under 18. A new default setting for people who do not have the Safe Search filter turned on will be active in the coming months, which will blur explicit images if they appear in Google search results. This default setting can be adjusted from the settings at any time.
- A new YouTube playlist that helps parents teach their kids about internet safety: Google introduces the YouTube Kids "Build a Safer Internet" playlist, which includes content about safe and responsible technology use and helps parents more easily explain internet safety and screen time to their children.
Google Security in numbers
Google blocks over 100 million phishing attempts every day. In 2021 alone, Google removed over 3.4 billion online ads and suspended over 5.6 million advertiser accounts. Google users can easily report ads that seem deceptive or if they violate one of Google's policies.
Directly from the Google Ads Center, they can find out more information about the advertiser, including whether or not it is a verified company.
Google checks the security of over 1 billion passwords every day. Two billion active Chrome users are protected with Google's advanced technology, and 5 billion devices are protected every day from unsafe websites with Google Safe Browsing. The improved version of Safe Browsing, which was launched last year, has reduced phishing for Chrome users by 35%.
Google also says it scans 100 billion apps daily for malware attacks and blocks 15 billion spam messages daily. Gmail blocks 99.9% of spam, phishing attempts and malware before it reaches your inbox.
