Digitalization - the future of agriculture

Agriculture has had a long road of evolution, from the creation of the plough to the innovative advent of the tractor, which have greatly improved agricultural productivity. Each revolutionary innovation has taken the sector to a new level of development. The modern agricultural revolution involves the introduction of advanced information technology (IT), which will reduce manual labor and costs while increasing productivity and yields. The digitization of the agribusiness sector becomes even more topical as we watch global population growth, shrinking arable land, climate change.

Although the digitization of agriculture is still a fairly new concept for many farmers, the benefits it offers are numerous and its use can be quite affordable.

Technologies that can be deployed in the agribusiness sector include farm management software systems, robotic systems, drones for monitoring farm facilities and internet of things precision farming technologies. Their use makes it possible to assess soil and plant conditions, increase land yields, optimize spending on fertilizer and crop protection products and identify areas in need of additional irrigation.

However, for maximum effect, it is also important to implement comprehensive solutions for process automation in the agro-industrial sector. In particular, systems that allow agribusinesses and farmers to switch to a rational use of fertilizer according to the needs of a particular area of the field. Taking into account soil conditions, farmers are provided with recommendations on optimal crop planting, amount and type of fertilizer and crop protection products. The load maps can be sent to intelligent agricultural machinery - seeders, sprayers, spreaders. All of these can be managed by the farmer via a web interface or a mobile app from his personal office.

Around 70% of farms in the US, Canada and Europe already use smart technologies in agriculture. Domestic farmers are far from such figures, but demand for "digital" is growing. According to experts, digitization will help Moldova's agro-industrial complex make a quantum leap forward, helping to double productivity, optimize labor and use water, energy and other resources more carefully.

The Moldovan Ministry of Agriculture is actively working in this direction.  Last year, the financial assistance project "Future Technologies in Agriculture" was signed for implementation in 2022-2024. Its main objective is the digital transformation of agriculture through the introduction of digital technologies and platform solutions to provide technological progress in the agricultural sector and to achieve productivity growth in digital agricultural enterprises. According to a survey conducted by the Agency for the Development and Modernization of Agriculture over 73 percent of farmers in Moldova want to participate in agricultural modernization programmer.

In the near future, data collected in the agricultural sector will allow the industry to achieve high efficiency and maximum productivity. And farmers themselves will be able to make money not only from agricultural products, but also from the quality data they have carefully collected from their fields. The future is called digitization!
